What is the time allowed to respond to a legal notice

Hello, I am constructing a house. The owner of the vacant site behind my construction site has served legal notice through a lawyer today (3rd June 2017) for the setback violations that he claims. I had requested time to make corrections but he has still gone ahead and served a notice. Upon receipt of notice today, I called up the person and told him that I need time as it requires some structural changes and told him I will keep him updated. He has agreed orally. Now, I am very clear not to go to court and want to sort it out mutually by making necessary corrections. My question is, should I respond to legal notice? If so, what is the time available by which I can respond.
