Employer hired with with promise of stock options within a year..now denying.

"At the end of the first year based on your performance you will be awarded stock options of the US company" . I had taken a pay cut to join this firm because of the stock options. I could have instead taken a job with a 30% hike. I have left that job and now they are denying the make any settlement. Can I claim anything?
